No to War, Not in Our Name! The Philippines Won’t be Ukraine!

The world watched last week as presidents Trump and Zelenskyy erupted into heated arguments over a U.S. proposed peace deal in Ukraine. Trump’s ambiguous proposal would have Ukraine cede rights to large portions of its precious minerals as a “debt repayment” for U.S. military aid since 2014, without guarantees of future U.S. support.

After making many provocations that led to the outbreak of full scale war in 2022, the U.S. spent three years sabotaging peace talks in order to bleed Russia in a grinding, costly conflict. Today, Ukraine fights a losing battle, short on manpower with much of the country and economy destroyed by the fighting.

The Philippines should watch closely: if our country is made into a “Ukraine of the Pacific” in the United States’ drive towards war with China, how will that end?

The Filipino people should question the wisdom of depending on the U.S. to loyally “protect” us from a powerful neighbor. Ukraine did everything the U.S. wanted and has been all but left for dead, treated like a colony to be looted for resources now that Washington’s mood has changed.

As America’s own war criminal diplomat Henry Kissinger put it, “It may be dangerous to be America's enemy, but to be America's friend is fatal.”

U.S. imperialism is only loyal to its own interests. “Ironclad commitments” hold no meaning unless it benefits the U.S. alone. The Filipino people can and must stand up on our own and oppose the war-mongering and intervention of U.S. imperialism.
